Golf: The Perfect Social Distancing Sport

While Qatar has begun to ease lockdown restrictions, there are still plenty of safety precautions in place that make exercising and playing sport in a social environment difficult. However, golf – where natural social distancing can easily be achieved – is proving to be the ultimate sport this summer.

“Golf really is a great social distancing sport,” says Mohammed Al Naimi, Deputy General Manager, Education City (EC) Golf Club. “Because it is played outside where it is possible – and extremely easy – to keep a safe distance between players. And this, in turn, reduces the chances of transmission.

Top of the class

Opening in January 2019, Education City Golf Club (ECGC) became just the second golf course in Qatar. The facility consists of 33 holes – two Championship courses (one 18-hole and one six-hole) as well as a floodlit nine-hole par three course – all of which were designed by Spaniard professional Jose Maria Olazábal. The vision of the project was to design, build and operate a golf facility that would drive the growth of golf in Qatar, while honouring Qatar Foundation’s values of education, innovation, sustainability and research and development. Not only does ECGC offer a unique experience, but it has a memorable backdrop too, with the 2022 FIFA World Cup stadium only a couple hundred metres from the 18th tee. Qatar does not do things by halves and this could not be truer for ECGC.

Pitching like Clockwork

Pitching is one of the toughest skill sets for amateur golfers to become competent in. The most common fault amateurs make when faced with what I call 'scoring' approach shots is deceleration into the ball – especially on any kind of half shot when you are trying to take something off the maximum distance you could hit a particular club. Any time you decelerate you risk making a poor contact and that simply leads to inconsistency.

Golf In Qatar: From Sandy Beginnings To World Class Championship Layouts

I’m standing on the first tee at Qatar’s oldest golf club. And when I say ‘tee’, I mean a concrete block on which there is a temporary mat. In front of me, the first fairway stretches out some 400 yards. And when I say ’fairway’ I mean concrete runway strewn with sand and rocks. To hit from the fairway you have to place a portable astroturf mat onto the concrete. At least you’re assured of a decent lie. When I arrive at the ‘green’ I will find a large platform covered in sand. It’s actually called a brown. Welcome to bona fide desert golf – Qatar style.
